Dozens of people in Georgia face charges for drug crimes

For their supposed part in a large-scale drug trafficking operation, 68 people in Georgia are facing a variety of criminal charges. State and federal authorities combined to form an Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force and have spent the past two years investigating drug trafficking across the state. Those individuals caught up in the sweep stand accused of a range of drug crimes, including conspiracy, distribution of controlled substances and possession with intent to distribute controlled substances, as well as charges related to firearms violations and more.

Several state and federal law enforcement agencies -- including the DEA, the FBI Middle Georgia Safe Streets Gang Task Force, the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Middle District of Georgia and several sheriff's offices -- joined efforts for the organized task force. Called "Operation Wu Block," the investigation has been going on for two years, and it was an effort to stem the tide of illegal narcotics plaguing local communities in Middle Georgia and elsewhere in the state. Federal grand juries have returned 19 indictments, and reports indicate that more indictments could be coming soon.

For the most part, the individuals are accused of distribution, possession with intent to distribute and conspiracy to distribute heroin and methamphetamine. Others also stand accused of possession of a firearm in relation to drug trafficking. If convicted of the charges, defendants can face serious consequences, with sentences ranging from 20 years in prison to a maximum of life in prison.

The good news for these individuals in Georgia facing charges for drug crimes and other felonies is that the criminal accusations are just that, mere accusations. They in no way constitute guilt, and the accused individuals have the right to defend themselves in court. To help improve their likelihood for a successful outcome, they would want to work with experienced criminal defense attorneys at every step in the process.
