Alcohol use can cause major problems for college students

Like other college students here in Georgia, you may be away from home for the first time. You want to make the most of your college experience, and that often means attending parties. Perhaps you attended a party where you drank too much alcohol and ended up under arrest.

Whether you were charged for being a minor in possession, violating open container laws or underage DUI, the ramifications with respect to your college career could be detrimental to your future. In addition, others could face civil and/or criminal penalties for your underage drinking. If anyone else suffered injuries due to your alcohol consumption, any penalties you face could result in harsher penalties.

You might think that as long as no one got hurt, that pleading guilty would not hurt anything. In most cases, the opposite is true. For example, if you have a scholarship, you could lose the resources to continue your education. Many college campuses have a zero tolerance policy when it comes to underage drinking, and in some circumstances, you might not be able to attend any longer. Further, you could face difficulties in obtaining employment in your chosen field after graduation.

The best thing to do is to contact a Georgia criminal defense attorney right away. Someone who understands the effects that alcohol-related crimes can potentially have on underage college students could help find a solution to the charges that does not jeopardize your future. In some cases, charges could be dismissed or reduced. Diversionary programs might be available to you that could keep any charges off your record as well. All of the potential resolutions to your situation should be explored before any further action is taken.
